In the latest addition to the multiauthor “Meant To Be” series that reimagines Disney movies, Sutanto (
You Will Never Be Me) offers a contemporary retelling of
Mulan. Here, Mulan is a VP at a firm owned by her father, Zhou, who hopes to acquire Wutai Gold, an old-school whiskey brand owned by the patriarchal Li family. When Zhou is hospitalized, Mulan decides to pretend that she is Zhou, since she’s been corresponding with Wutai Gold CEO Shang all along, in hopes that the Lis will still decide to sell the company to her even though she is a woman, and that her father will give her a long-desired promotion. When the Li family invites Mulan and her cousin Mushu to their ranch for a few days, Mulan must prove that she is worthy of taking over Wutai Gold, but will her attraction to Shang, who still thinks she is Zhou, get in the way of keeping her father’s dreams alive?
VERDICT Readers will love this up-to-date, closed-door romance version of the beloved Disney movie Mulan, which tackles misogyny and the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry, while giving Mulan and Shang the satisfying ending that fans have always wanted.
